NEWS 9: PRODUCING REEL [JULY 2021-2022]

This is just a snippet of the 200+ shows I produced during my one year at News 9.

I was hired as the weekend morning producer, then promoted to weekend evenings in eight months. I also regularly filled in on the 12pm and 5pm weekday newscasts.

NEWS 9: CONTINUOUS COVERAGE [11/18/2021]

I led live continuous coverage of the moment Gov. Kevin Stitt commuted inmate Julius Jones' death sentence. I had produced this 12p around his scheduled execution before Stitt released his decision.

This was my first time producing live continuous coverage. At this point, I had only been producing there for four months.

UCENTRAL: AWARD WINNING [03/31/2021]

I produced this newscast on my first week back on campus after remotely producing from Malaysia for a year.

I submitted this newscast for the 2021 UCO Mass Communication Awards and won in the 'Producing' category.

UCENTRAL: NEW FORMATS [03/22/2021]

During the Spring 2021 semester, I created the "Break It Down" segment, where I would work with the talent to take a complex story and break it down easily for the audience.

In this newscast, we broke down the hazing reports uncovered from the UCO cheer team. We also had an exclusive interview with a UCO cheer alum, who shared her experiences of hazing within the team. The newscast received over 1.1k views on Facebook.

in quarantine in Oklahoma. (The beginning

of the video is cut off due to tech issues.)

UCENTRAL: REMOTE PRODUCING

[11/16/2020]

This newscast is a highlight for me as we didn't have a producer on the ground that day. I had to coordinate with the director to produce the show live over Zoom. Despite the challenge we faced, we still produced a great and smooth newscast. We even included a surprise birthday kicker for one of our desk anchors.

UCENTRAL: SPECIAL WEB EDITION [10/28/2020]

UCO had shut down campus due to a historic ice storm. The UCentral team still wanted to update the Oklahoma community and chose to put together a web show in 4 hours. The only difference with our normal newscast was that each segment was pre-recorded and edited together instead of being broadcast live.

UCENTRAL: PERSONAL FAVORITES [10/07/2020]

About an hour before we were supposed to go live, I was asked to send several members of our crew (including on-air talents and reporters) home immediately due to potential exposure to COVID-19. The remaining crew and I adapted and overcame the situation to successfully produce a show that day. It was a memorable and great learning experience.

UCENTRAL: AWARD WINNING [04/16/2020]

When UCO shut down campus due to the pandemic, the UCentral team created a 30-min webshow to substitute our regular newscast. The show was pre-recorded and made out of individual segments that were edited together. I worked with the director, anchors and external reporters to coordinate their respective segments.

This newscast was recognized as a finalist for Great Plains Student Broadcast of the Year at the 2021 Great Plains Journalism Awards.

OKC "SOLIDARITY WITH MYANMAR" RALLY

(FOR KOCO-TV) [APRIL 2021]

During my internship, I helped KOCO produce a story for their 10 p.m. newscast. I had taken photos of a "Solidarity with Myanmar" rally at the Oklahoma State Capitol independently and sent them to the executive producer. They used my photos and videos for the story. The EP also asked me to send bullet points of what happened at the rally for an anchor script.

This was very exciting for me as it was the first time I was able to help the station with content outside of story pitches.

MALAYSIA QUARANTINE EXPERIENCE [APRIL 2020]

I returned home to Malaysia from Oklahoma due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon arrival in the country, I was required to spend 14 days in isolation as part of the government's mandated quarantine order. I decided to document my experience.

I planned, filmed and edited this package by myself. It was a unique learning experience, especially when it came to focusing the camera on myself.

I submitted this and my Twitter updates thread for the Society of Professional Journalists' College Coronavirus Coverage awards and won "Winners of the Winners" (Top 3) out of 995 entries submitted.

MALAYSIAN ONLINE SCHOOL [MAY 2020]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Malaysian government had imposed a country-wide lockdown to curb the spread. No one was allowed to leave the house. As a result, many schools shifted to virtual instruction.

I produced a nat-sound package over my sister's experience with online classes as she had just started her journey with her secondary education. This was filmed and edited by myself for a Video Field Production class assignment.

OKLAHOMA FLU SEASON [DEC 2019]

I reported on how the flu was impacting Oklahoma and spoke with a medical professional about how to prevent catching the virus. The highlight of this package is a creative standup I did at the end of the video.

I filmed and edited this package by myself. I remember having to walk in the cold rain to the hospital and back for my interview as I didn't have a car. It was about a two mile walk. I was even carrying my camera and heavy equipment.

I submitted this news package for the 2019 Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association Awards and won Second Place for Hard News Story.

I covered most updates regarding Spring 2021 graduation plans at UCO, starting with UCO students petitioning for guests at graduation to UCO releasing finalized plans for the outdoor ceremonies with guests.

I kept constant communication with UCO officials, specifically the university's Vice President for Communications and Public Affairs and Commencement Director to get the latest updates. I also reached out to various students for their thoughts, including students who petitioned and graduating seniors.

I wrote about almost all updates over the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in Oklahoma. I specifically wrote about UCO-hosted vaccine clinics, the availability of vaccines for international students in Oklahoma, the expansions of the state's vaccine plan. I believe I was also the only person in local media to cover vaccine eligibility for international students.

To successfully write these stories, I attended virtual press conferences held by the Oklahoma State Health Department. I was the only representative for student media in the conferences. I also kept contact with health department officials and UCO leadership for updates.

As an international student from Malaysia, I have a passion for covering stories that affect the international community at UCO. I wrote about the ongoing military coup in Myanmar and how it affected a UCO international Burmese student. The story won in the 'Print News - Feature Writing' category at the 2021 UCO Mass Communication Awards.

I also produced a photo story over a local rally that was held at the Oklahoma State Capitol by the local Burmese community. All photos were taken and edited by me.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS: UCO community remembers former international student [APRIL 2021]

This was my first "in remembrance" story. I had received a news tip that a former student had died in her home country after a boating accident. Even though she wasn't at UCO for long, I felt that she still deserved to have her legacy and impact known.

The story was challenging as I didn't personally know the student. Through the help of social media, I was able to interview several students and community members who were close to McDonald during her time at UCO.

The story was featured on the front page of the paper.

CAMPUS NEWS: UCO juniors win at annual international pageant [APRIL 2021]

I wrote a story over the 2021 Annual UCO International Pageant, which is one of the few pageants that is still actively run at UCO despite budget cuts.

I interviewed the winners and pageant director about their thoughts over the pageant being held mid-pandemic. The winners also explained their pageant platforms in more detail and how they plan to use it to impact the UCO campus.

I took and edited the photos paired with the article myself. A full collection of photos from the pageant can be found here.

Malaysia tackles COVID-19 pandemic

PHOTO STORY: Malaysia handles COVID-19 pandemic [SEPT 2020]

I produced a photo story about the different preventative measures Malaysia took to curb the spread of COVID-19 and wrote about its differences with how the U.S. handled the pandemic. This was the first story I wrote for the student newspaper, and it featured above the fold.

Students petition for pass/no pass grading

CAMPUS NEWS: Students petition for pass/no pass grading option [NOV 2020]

UCentral News broke the story of how two students were petitioning to ask UCO to implement a P/NP grading system, and I wrote this as a follow-up and more detailed version of it.

I reached out to the petition authors, UCO students that supported the petition and UCO officials for their decision on the matter.

Ice storm impacts UCO community

CAMPUS NEWS: Historic October ice storm impacts UCO community [NOV 2020]

I wrote about the impact of a huge ice storm on Oklahoma. The storm had left thousands of people without power and caused significant damage.

I spoke to UCO students living on and off campus about their experiences and a student organization that had canceled their events due to the storm. I also reached out to UCO's Housing department to ask how they were keeping students on campus and in quarantine safe.

Breaking down the U.S. House of Representatives candidates

POLITICS: Know your U.S. House of Representatives Candidates [OCT 2020]

For The Vista's Decision 2020 coverage, I wrote an in-depth profile piece about each Oklahoma congressional candidate running for the U.S. House.

I researched and wrote about the candidates from both parties and included their background, political involvement and top issues that UCO students were interested in.

This story took about 8 hours of research, fact-checking and writing. The end result was a three-page spread.

Breaking down Oklahoma's state questions

POLITICS: Breaking down the Oklahoma state questions [OCT 2020]

For The Vista's election coverage, I researched and wrote about Oklahoma's two state questions, SQ805 and SQ814.

When writing this piece, I prioritized breaking down each question as simply as possible. My perspective as someone from outside the U.S. was very helpful in making sure the questions were written in a way that was easy to understand.
